ARDOR (AR-dor)
Latin, "burning heat, flame."

The Romans used ardor for the heat of a fire, and for the heat that lives in a body: a fever, a flush, a feeling that will not cool. It came from ardere, "to burn," the same verb behind English "ardent" and "arson." Poets reached for it when they meant desire, because desire was understood as a fire that is lit and then tended.

The fragrance is that tended fire. Ginger and blood orange open hot and bright, sweet at the edges. White flowers follow, jasmine and orange blossom, creamy and warm, with a thread of green chilli leaf running through them that never lets the heat drop. Sandalwood and patchouli bank the flame beneath, smoky and soft. It does not flare and fade. It burns steadily for hours, close to the skin and then outward.

Heat, kept alive.
